This guide shows you how to set up live proctoring for an exam using two devices. Students will use Device 1 to run LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor and Device 2 for Zoom (or Zoom and Canvas for file uploads). Follow each part of the setup in order.
If this is your first time creating a Canvas quiz with LockDown Browser, sign up for a Respondus webinar. If this is your first time using Zoom, watch these Zoom tutorials.
Note: Live Proctoring on LockDown Browser using Zoom comes with certain limitations. The students and the professor (or proctor) cannot interact like in a live proctoring environment. The professor/proctor sees the students as they take the exam in real time while the students see only the LockDown Browser exam. The Zoom plugin for LockDown Browser Live Proctoring is recommended for 25 students or less per Zoom room. Depending on the number of students in your class, you may need to create multiple testing rooms on Zoom with proctors to match. Also, this feature does not provide a student video like Respondus Monitor; instead, you have to rely on the Zoom recording.

Before you begin
- Have your students download the latest University version of LockDown Browser.
- Have your students review basic troubleshooting tips on the University’s LockDown Browser student support page. You can also include these tips in your course or in the Canvas quiz description.
- Sign up for a Respondus training webinar, watch training videos, or visit their Knowledge Base.
- It is helpful to have a working knowledge of Zoom and Lockdown Browser before creating and administering a two-device live-proctored exam.
- To enhance the security of a synchronous exam (Canvas quiz), we recommend using two devices.
- We recommend that you run a practice quiz before administering the graded quiz.
Part I: Creating the Zoom Meeting
In this section we show you how to set up a Zoom meeting with the right features to help with exam integrity. Students will access Zoom on their phone or tablet (Device 2). If you have more than 25 students, you should set up multiple testing rooms for each group with no more than 25 students per room.
Step 1 – Configuring Zoom Meeting Settings for Two-Device Live Proctoring
- Sign in to your Zoom account and click Settings on the left.
- Scroll down until you see “Chat.”
- To disable the chat feature, switch the toggle off. When the following popup displays, click Disable.
- Scroll down and disable the File Transfer feature as well.
You can re-enable all these features after you administer the Canvas quiz.
Step 2 – Scheduling a Zoom Meeting for Live Proctoring
- Click Meetings, then click Schedule a Zoom Meeting.
- At Security, enable the Waiting Room and UD authentication security features.
- Create a separate meeting room for each 25-member group of students (alphabetical groups usually work fine).
- Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the exam and meeting duration to allow for the Startup Sequence.
- Click Save and Copy the Meeting Link.
Note: If you have multiple Zoom rooms, each proctor needs to create a meeting room for each testing group. The Zoom meeting numbers should be provided in the quiz description.
Step 3 – Sharing the Zoom Link
- Add the Zoom link to your Canvas quiz description and anywhere else on Canvas, announcements, email, etc.
Note: Do not share the access code/password until the Zoom meeting for the exam begins.
Part II: Creating a Canvas Quiz with LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor Enabled
Step 1 – Creating a Practice Quiz
Create a Canvas practice quiz before you administer a LockDown Browser-enabled Canvas graded quiz.
Note: If you will use two devices on your graded quiz, you must also use two devices on the practice quiz.
Step 2A – Creating a Canvas Graded Quiz
Learn how to create a Canvas graded quiz.
Note: LockDown Browser does not support the file upload question type. If you need to create an exam with file upload questions, see the File Upload workflow.
Step 2B – Importing a Graded Quiz in Canvas
- Click Settings on the lower-left of your course navigation.
- To import Canvas quizzes from a previous course (or another course or section), click Import Existing Content at the top-right.
- At Content Type, choose Copy a Canvas Course.
- At Search for a course, type the course name in the search bar.
- At Content, choose Select specific content, then choose the quizzes you want to import.
- Click Import.
Now you are ready to update the dates and details of the quiz.
Step 3 – Updating the Canvas Quiz Details and Description
- Click Quizzes at the bottom left, then click Edit at the top right.
- Add the Zoom link to the quiz description, along with the links for the test meetings and directions for the exam. (If needed, add student accommodations to the description as well.)
- Set the time limit, select all desired options, and enter the correct Assign To and Due date.
Step 4 – Saving the Canvas Quiz
- Click Save and publish.
Note: If the exam is scheduled for a dedicated time slot, you need to adjust the due date time to reflect the increase in time and also moderate the quiz for students with special accommodations.
Step 5 – Enabling LockDown Browser and Creating an Access Code
- Click LockDown Browser on the left. (You may need to enable LDB for the first time).
- Click the down arrow to the left of the quiz you want to use.
- Click Settings.
- On the Settings page, click Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
- At Password Settings, create a unique Access code. You will use this in the Zoom Meeting.
Note: We recommend enabling the access code feature for synchronous exams that use two devices.
Step 7 – Advanced Settings
- Review the Advanced Settings to see if you want to use any of them. (Explanations are provided below.)
When ready, scroll down to enable Respondus Monitor.
- Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results: This option makes students log back into LockDown Browser to view their results as allowed by your Canvas Quiz Settings. Remember to NOT share quiz responses if you plan on using the questions again in the future.
- Lock students into the browser until the exam is completed: This option forces the student to stay in the quiz until it is finished. We do not recommend using this as some students may finish earlier than others. This setting is intended for a face-to-face class where you are holding a lecture or discussion right after the quiz.
- Allow students to take this exam with an iPad: This is commonly used; the student needs to download the app from the Apple Store, not the download link.
- Allow students to use LockDown Browser for Chromebook: This is commonly used; the student needs to download the chrome extension from the Google Chrome Web Store, not the download link.
- Allow access to specific external web domains: You can add the URL of a website here so you can incorporate that website into a question. The student can then navigate to that website to reference it when answering a question. This can be helpful when reviewing a journal article or picture with text or video. When the student finishes reviewing the website content, the popup closes and they return to the quiz to answer the question.
- Enable Calculator on the toolbar: If enabled, the calculator icon will display to the left of the search bar. There are two versions of the calculator – standard and scientific.
- Enable Printing from the toolbar: If enabled, the printer icon will display to the left of the search bar. This is not commonly used and not recommended for most remote exams.
Step 8 – Enabling LockDown Browser With Respondus Monitor
- Click Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) and select the desired features.
- Click Edit Text to add additional instructions, such as any protocols for interacting with the professor or proctor on Zoom.
For example: “Please raise your physical hand and look towards the Zoom Meeting on Device 2. You will be unmuted and addressed when the professor or proctor is ready.” - If the exam involves a handwritten section, do not click “Notify Students during the exam if face cannot be detected.” Otherwise, this is a good feature to enable in most testing scenarios.
- Click Save + Close when ready to activate LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor.
You will see the name of the quiz has changed and the features are enabled.
Part III: Administering the Exam
Step 9 – Exam Preparation and Protocols to Consider
- Create Zoom rooms for each 25-student group and make sure you have enough proctors.
- Include additional instructions in the Canvas quiz description and in Respondus detailing how to address the proctor or professor during the exam. (You should also review this during the practice quiz.)
- Create a practice quiz with two-device live proctoring just as you would for any LBD Canvas quiz.
- Keep the LDB password secret until you are ready to administer the exam during the Zoom meeting.
- Have students position their Zoom device facing them from a side angle but also towards the monitor/laptop.
Step 10 – Exam Time
- Start the Zoom meeting for the exam.
- Admit students from the waiting room and take attendance.
- Review the protocols to engage with the proctor or professor on Zoom and how to exit the exam (exit on Device 1 first, then Device 2).
- Go over the Startup Sequence and Environment Check.
>> Explanation of the Startup Sequence-
- Webcam Check: This checks if the webcam is working properly and if the connection to the server is secure.
Note: If you are using a desktop for Device 1, you should have an external/detachable webcam to complete the environment check. - Additional Instructions: If enabled, you can click "Edit Text" to add any additional instructions for the exam. This is often needed for two-device exams.
- Guidelines + Tips: This showcases tips with useful icons and graphics to the user.
- Student Photo: This takes a picture of the student and uses that picture for their student report in the class results. This is helpful especially for classes with larger enrollment.
- Student ID: This takes a picture of the student’s ID card.
- Environment Check: This is highly recommended to help prevent cheating. The Environment Check should take about 45-60 seconds to complete. The recording should start in the testing position of the webcam (facing the student), then it should record above and around the monitor on the desk, then below and around the inside of the desk, and finally back to the testing position.
Note: Most cheating takes place from monitors or digital devices like tablets or phones that are placed behind the laptop or monitor using a special harness or other device and accessed with a wireless keyboard. You can usually detect this potential cheating by looking at the Canvas usage report for the Quiz and comparing how long a student was on the question with no activity and the typing of the keyboard showcasing activity on the second “illegal” monitor. Comprehensive attention to the environment check during the Canvas practice quiz and the graded quiz is helpful in deterring students from cheating.
- Facial Detection Check: This is recommended to make sure the student is facing the testing device as much as possible. (For open-book exams or exams that require handwritten responses, uncheck the second option “Notifying students during the exam if face cannot be detected” as the student will be looking down or away from the screen for extended periods of time. A two-device approach is better for this scenario).
- Advanced Settings: This is not recommended. If you need any of these settings, please reach out so we can better assist you in your exam design or delivery.
- Webcam Check: This checks if the webcam is working properly and if the connection to the server is secure.
-
- When you have answered the students’ questions and given the directions, mute all the students.
- Give your students the password to begin the exam.
After students submit their exam on Device 1, they can then exit the Zoom room on Device 2.
